Plans_First

These are plans for a Catholic Elementary School. It has several classes, chapel. auditorium, cafeteria, offices, library, etc.
Pic 1: Its the first floor, it consists of the Cafe, and general offices.
Pic 2: Its the second floor, its mostly for the Gymnasium. It has locker rooms, and bigger bathrooms then the rest of the floors.
Pic 3: The 3rd floor consists of the library and computer rooms. Since there aren't as many students and also since they are young, they don't need as many computer rooms. The library is both indoor and outdoor.
Pic 4: The 4th floor is mostly classrooms, and Auditorium. There are also group classrooms.
Pic 5: 5th floor is the chapel, the layout is still in works. But the whole space goes to making the chapel. And the outside is a roof garden.
Pic 6: Shows the building shape without the roof. The image below shows the shape of the roof.

End Product

  • Play with solid And Void as well as pushing and pulling. Starts off with columns and goes to glass walls on the second floor and to a roof garden right outside the chapel.

New massing

It fits well on the Manhattan site. The organization is the same, middle being the chapel, left side would be the classrooms, computer rooms etc, while the right is the gym, cafe, auditorium, maybe even the library.

Final

Idea 2

  • Idea 2 with twisted rectangles again. Unlike the last one, this one is more symmetrical, because the last one lacked the right spaces.

Another idea, twisted shapes.

  • This is another idea, which is created with twisting 3 rectangles. There would be windows on 3 sides with similar patterns. Also the middle would be glass with concrete behind it, which will have a cross shape carved out, much like the church made by Tadeo Ando, in which the cross shines through the chapel when light comes through.

Design Concept. Study of cubes and squares.

  • My concept is the study of Cubes/Square shapes. It's to see how a simple shape can be abstract and different, both by manipulating it and using different colors.

The site

I have chosen the Brookyln Site, Which could be visited HERE

Research

1. What building typology you are researching?
- I am researching Schools.

2. Why are you researching this building typology?
- Because I would like to learn about the layout of schools, as well
as add in new things.

3. What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research?
- It's a Catholic Elementary school, which includes a chapel, library, auditorium, and classrooms.

4. What are the examples that you will be researching ?
  • Bigelow Chapel, New Brighton, Minn. HGA, Inc.

  • Glavin Family Chapel at Babson College, Wellesley, Mass. William Rawn Associates, Architects

  • Temple Bat Yahm Chapel and Campus, Newport Beach, Calif. Lehrer Architects

  • St. Croix Lutheran High School in Minnesota by Kodet Architectural Group, Ltd.

  • St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, Hazel Park, Mich. Constantine George Pappas

  • School of the Holy Child, Rye, N.Y. Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects

5. What are your goals for working with this building type?
- I would like to create a modern chapel with a modern school. Its an interesting concept to have both buildings together under one roof. Also I have always wanted to design a church.

6. What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building?
- There's a chapel, library, auditorium, classrooms so far.
